IADL is the abbreviation for “instrumental activities of daily living”.

Definition

The IADL Scale by Lawton and Brody is a method to measure the everyday expertise of geriatric patients (Geriatric Assessment) based on the ADL Score. It measures 8 central, instrumental activities of daily living:

• phoning
• shopping
• cooking
• housekeeping
• doing laundry
• using means of transport
• taking medication
• dealing with financial transactions

After the therapist has filled in the questionnaire, a score between 0 and 8 results for the patient.

0 = entirely dependent on the support of others

8 = necessary activities of daily living can be coped with

The score can be used for all people aged 65+ and for patients in the geriatrics, after stroke or TBI.

A measurement can only be repeated every three months in order to document the course of therapy.
